Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Green Fraternal Party (Les Verts Fraternels) criticized the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) for not covering their press conference on April 24th. The conference addressed several issues, including the cancellation of a planned sit-in outside the French embassy, their 57th anniversary celebration on April 27th, and the refusal of the Beau-Bassin-Rose-Hill municipality to grant permission for a cultural event in Plaisance.
Party leader Didier Michel stated that despite sending an invitation, they received no clear explanation from MBC for the lack of coverage. He indicated that legal action might be considered, citing the MBC’s obligation to cover their press conference, which was jointly organized with the Green Reparation Foundation.
Regarding the cancelled visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, Michel explained that the Green Reparation Foundation had sent a letter in March requesting a meeting to discuss France’s potential role in reparations for descendants of slaves. The lack of response prompted the planned sit-in, which was subsequently cancelled due to the President’s visit being called off. A legal challenge to the police’s denial of permission for the sit-in was also withdrawn.
President Warren Malépa announced their 57th-anniversary celebration on April 27th in Mont-Choisy, coinciding with Quasimodo Sunday. He highlighted the party’s historical role in promoting peace and its past achievements, including advocating for Creole language recognition and establishing the Justice and Truth Commission. A minute of silence will be observed to honor Pope Benedict XVI.
Secretary General Ji Bruce Nicolas further detailed the party’s rejected request to hold an event in Plaisance on May 1st, criticizing the municipality’s decision and questioning the prevailing mentality. The party plans to hold its celebration regardless.
