Africa-Press – Mauritius. During a site visit yesterday at the Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital in Constance, Flacq, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, had a meeting with Dr Vinay Kumar, a visiting Vascular Surgeon from Yashoda Hospital, India.
In a statement, Minister Bachoo recalled that the Ministry of Health and Wellness has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Yashoda Hospital to enable Mauritian patients to be sent to India for treatment. It also provides visits by Indian specialists to Mauritius to conduct complex surgeries and give training to local medical teams.
Dr Kumar is in Mauritius to perform specialised procedures on patients with blocked or damaged blood vessels. These include the creation of arterio-venous fistulas—crucial for patients undergoing dialysis—as well as surgeries for peripheral artery disease, a condition that restricts blood flow to the limbs and can lead to severe complications. His visit forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen advanced surgical care for patients with serious vascular conditions.
Minister Bachoo further indicated that Dr Kumar has carried out around 20 surgeries during his stay, 14 of which involved complex vascular cases.
Recalling that approximately 40% of the Mauritian population lives with diabetes and that some 700 amputations are performed annually, the Minister added that the interventions of specialists from Yashoda Hospital can help prevent amputations and ensure more effective surgical care for patients.
