Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mauritius has received a new consignment of 30 electric buses, which is part of the 100 buses offered by the Government of India under its Development Assistance Programme. This initiative is in line with the country’s ongoing transition towards cleaner and more sustainable public transportation.

The Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed, and the First Secretary of the High Commission of India, Mr Shubham Kumar, were present, yesterday, at the unloading of the buses in at the port area in Port Louis.

The latest delivery follows the arrival of an initial batch of 10 buses, which has already been integrated into the National Transport Corporation (NTC) fleet. An additional batch of 15 buses is scheduled to be delivered in January 2026, as part of efforts to modernise the public transport system.

In a statement, Minister Mahomed expressed gratitude to the Government of India for the donation of the electric buses which operate on electricity rather than fossil fuels, thereby contributing to the national objective of reducing carbon emissions and fuel imports.

The Minister pointed out that the electric buses will be recharged after peak hours, from 9 p.m. onwards, ensuring that charging activities do not put additional strain on the CEB electrical network.

Mr Mahomed indicated that India’s support has also been sought for the provision of photovoltaic panels to reduce dependency on fossil energy sources. Assistance has been solicited from the United Nations Development Programme with the view to further promote low-carbon electric bus transport for Mauritius. The Minister is chairing a project steering committee in this regard.
