Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, received, at his office, in Port Louis, yesterday, the newly appointed President of the Mauritius Sugar Syndicate (MSS), Mr Roshan Baguant.
In a statement, Mr Baguant deemed the meeting fruitful. According to Mr Baguant, an update on the market situation, which had enabled an increase in the price of sugar to be paid to producers for the current harvest, was presented to the Agro-Industry Minister.
“We are also aligned with the challenges faced by planters, including the lack of labour and the operational costs that continue to increase,” he added.
The new MSS President affirmed that in that context, the meeting focused on the need to set up a ‘framework’ in order to give more visibility to sugar producers and ensure their sustainability.
Moreover, the continued decline in land under sugarcane, which led to a drop in production, and consequently, an erosion of the competitiveness, was evoked, too.
“We appealed to the Minister to ensure that this haemorrhage of surface loss is urgently stopped,” he underlined.
