Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, announced today in a press conference that he has requested the resignation of Rama Sithanen, the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, citing an untenable situation at the head of the institution. Although he acknowledged the progress made under Sithanen’s leadership, the Prime Minister insisted that the current circumstances cannot be sustained.
He clarified that this request does not question Sithanen’s abilities as Governor, recognizing the advancements during his tenure. However, Rama Sithanen himself requested a meeting with the Prime Minister before submitting his resignation, indicating a measure of cooperation in the transition process.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgency to act swiftly in order to safeguard the integrity of the Bank of Mauritius. He also revealed plans to appoint a new Deputy Governor by Monday, with a new Governor to follow soon after. He stressed that such instability cannot occur within a central bank.
Furthermore, Navin Ramgoolam expressed frustration about the challenge of finding suitable candidates in Mauritius, pointing out that every nomination triggers opposition campaigns. He rhetorically asked, “Is there no family here?” before affirming the government’s commitment to appointing the best possible people to these key positions.
