Africa-Press – Mauritius. With climate change threatening our coastlines and beaches, Mauritius, which boasts 322 km of coastline and 210 km of beaches, faces growing concerns from beach lovers, fishermen, and tourists alike who all wish to protect these natural assets. To address erosion issues, particularly in 33 critical sites along 31 km of coastline, the Ministry of Environment is conducting studies and consulting experts who provide recommendations for action.

It was clarified that the rehabilitation work at Albion Beach does not involve the public beach area but rather a section of the Albion Fisheries Research Centre, where wall repairs are currently underway. This government project underwent an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), including consultations with local residents held on April 21, 2023, allowing all concerned parties to share their opinions.

Since taking office, Junior Minister Joanna Bérenger and the Minister of Environment have actively engaged with NGOs by organizing workshops to listen to their feedback and consider their proposals. These inputs have been forwarded to consultants for further evaluation.

The ministry supports natural and less invasive solutions for beach preservation, especially where improvements are essential, always prioritizing the interests of the Mauritian people. The complete project will be presented again to Albion residents, with assurances that the works will benefit the beach, the lagoon, and the local community.
