Africa-Press – Mauritius. China’s new ambassador to Mauritius, Mme Huang Shifang, presented her credentials to President Dharam Gokhool. President Gokhool expressed gratitude for China’s assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Wakashio oil spill, reaffirming Mauritius’ commitment to the One China policy.
Discussions focused on the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Mauritius-China free trade agreement. The meeting highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Mauritius and China, dating back to 1972, and emphasized cooperation in various sectors, including economic, social, cultural, and tourism.
Both sides affirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for trade and investment. Separately, a delegation from Yamaha Music Gulf FZE, accompanied by Japanese Ambassador Masahiro Kan, met with Mauritius’ Minister of Education Mahend Gungapersad to discuss promoting music education in public schools.
The delegation presented the Yamaha School Project, which focuses on developing music education and instrumental music programs in primary schools internationally.
Minister Gungapersad welcomed the initiative, recognizing its potential to enhance creativity and non-cognitive skills in young students. He noted that implementing the project in Mauritius would require careful consideration of various factors.
The meeting reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance educational opportunities and foster international collaborations in the field of music education.
The two sets of meetings highlight Mauritius’ active engagement in strengthening diplomatic relations and pursuing educational collaborations with key international partners.
Both China and Japan are important economic and diplomatic partners for Mauritius, and these meetings underscore the importance of these relationships for the island nation.
