Africa-Press – Mauritius. Producing locally, intelligently, and sustainably. Recently, Agriterra adopted a mechanized model for harvesting its potato fields, allowing better yields and increased productivity with fewer losses. In the second week of October, 28 hectares of potatoes were harvested on Agriterra’s land, including 14 hectares mechanically harvested for consumption.

Objectives include reducing dependence on imports, diversifying agricultural production, and enhancing the country’s food self-sufficiency while supporting the local economy and employment. “With modern agricultural techniques and optimized organization, we are able to efficiently produce consumption potatoes to meet the growing needs of Mauritius,” explains Jimmy Anthony, Area Manager at Agriterra.

This approach is part of a crop rotation with sugarcane and promotes more environmentally friendly agriculture. “By diversifying our crops and adopting innovative methods, we strengthen not only our food autonomy but also the resilience of Mauritian agriculture,” adds Sébastien Mamet, General Manager of Agriterra.

He specifies that this initiative fully aligns with Agriterra’s commitment to offering quality products adapted to the local market while promoting responsible practices. The mechanized harvest, integrated into a modern agronomic approach, helps preserve soil fertility and addresses labor shortages and aging.

“Additionally, logistical optimization—faster harvesting and controlled storage—helps reduce losses. The sugarcane-potato rotation is no accident: it is a sustainable strategy to limit the effects of monoculture and prepare agriculture for the future,” concludes Sébastien Mamet.
