Africa-Press – Mauritius. Prof. Osama Ibrahim Sayed Ahmed, Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmology, Alexandria University, Egypt, and former president of the University, visited the Moka (Subramanya Bharati) Eye Hospital, this afternoon, in Moka.
He is currently in Mauritius to follow up on a webinar held in March 2021 and which focused on ‘Mauritius as the investment bridge to Africa for Egyptian healthcare operators.
’
During his one-week visit, he will be meeting with several personalities including the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, and the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun.
In a statement, Prof. Osama Ibrahim lauded the excellent work carried out by the medical personnel at the Moka Eye Hospital who, he underscored, are extremely qualified.
He expressed the wish to collaborate with the healthcare providers in this field with particular emphasis in helping in organising conferences and highly sophisticated programmes for specialisation.
According to him, a Medical Centre of Excellence could also be set up in Mauritius in the near future. This Centre of Excellence will be a tertiary centre whereby cases can be referred from neighbouring countries or even remote areas that need special care and attention, he said.
All these issues will be discussed with Mauritian authorities and hopefully we can come up with positive results, he added. Prof. Ibrahim further recalled that he is a member of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences and the aim of that institution is to spread refractive surgery as a speciality.
Refractive surgery means correction of untreated refractive errors and it constitutes 19% of reduced vision in the world and more in the developing countries who are unable to provide glasses and optic lenses, he highlighted.
He moreover announced that a conference is scheduled in March/April 2022 in Mauritius and where the Faculty and College Foundation will be inaugurated. Dr Ibrahim is a distinguished professor of Ophthalmology with a doctoral thesis in Radial and Astigmatic Keratotomy.
During his thirty years of clinical practice and research development, he has supervised and discussed more than seventy Master’s and Doctoral theses both in Alexandria University and almost all other universities in Egypt.
He is an active member of virtually all prestigious Ophthalmic societies in the world, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
