Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Nouveau Démocrate (ND) party is highlighting a national essay contest aimed at young people as part of its initiatives to mark International Democracy Day, celebrated on September 15. With the inspiring theme “The people are the root, democracy is the tree,” the party seeks to place youth at the center of discussions about the country’s democratic future.

Established by the United Nations in 2007, International Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the importance of defending democratic principles, encouraging citizen participation, and protecting fundamental rights. To reinvigorate this commemoration, ND is launching several initiatives including the creation of a Democracy and Meritocracy Club in partnership with academic institutions, conducting awareness campaigns, and introducing a platform for citizen dialogue.

Kushal Lobine, ND’s deputy and leader, emphasizes their goal to raise awareness among Mauritians about the need to sustain a vibrant democracy. He stresses that the party is deeply committed to democratic values and wants to play an active role in electoral and constitutional reforms, reflecting their dedication to strengthening the political system.

Lobine also calls on the government to act swiftly on its promises, particularly the establishment of the long-awaited Constitution Review Commission. He stresses the urgency to move forward by broadening consultations with civil society and the public on electoral reforms, constitutional amendments, protection of acquired rights, freedom, justice, and the separation of powers.

Following the recent questioning of journalist Narain Jasodanand by the Cybercrime Unit, Kushal Lobine expressed concern on his Facebook page about the conduct of the operation. He warned that any infringement on freedom of expression poses a direct threat to democracy, highlighting the party’s vigilant stance on protecting democratic freedoms.
