Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union (EU) and Head of Delegation to Mauritius, Mr Vincent Degert, paid a farewell call on the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, this afternoon, in Port Louis.

In a statement after the meeting, Ambassador Degert pointed out that the meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister focused on the four years of extremely intense collaboration the EU has had with the foreign affairs sector.

“I think we have done a very job and maintained a very good partnership with the Minister and his team in handling the various emergencies we have had to deal with, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the MV Wakashio oil spill and, the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering,” he said.

Furthermore, the EU Ambassador highlighted that discussions pertained to all the issues for which the Foreign Affairs Minister is responsible, such as maritime safety and the fight against drug trafficking and arms smuggling on the High Seas.

Mr Degert underlined that the EU and the Foreign Affairs Ministry have the prospects of working together and thus, he talked about further deepening our trade agreement as trade is doing very well between Mauritius and the EU.

“Mauritius exports a considerable part of its products to the European market, so we would like to work on factors that can contribute to the improvement in terms of conditions and situation including phyto-sanitary standards and customs legislation,” he stated.

He also spoke of values such as human rights and areas where the EU and Mauritius have worked together, namely, the Children’s Bill, legislations on Gender Equality, Domestic Violence, and Disability.

It is recalled that Mr Vincent Degert was designated the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the EU and Head of Delegation to Mauritius on 18 September 2019.
