Former Minister Files Complaint Over Online Defamation

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Former Minister of National Infrastructure, Mahendranath Sharma Hurreeram (56), known as Bobby, filed a complaint at the Vallée-des-Prêtres police station on Monday, alleging violations of the Information and Communications Technologies Act due to defamatory statements made against him on social media.

In his statement, Mr. Hurreeram, an active member of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM), reported repeated attacks on Facebook, particularly from a profile named “Sen Na.

” He claims these attacks began after a May 19th press conference at the Sun Trust Building in Port-Louis, an event widely covered by the press and social media.

He alleges that the “Sen Na” profile shared a live video of the event accompanied by insulting and mocking comments. These posts, he claims, severely damaged his public image, tarnished his credibility, and affected his dignity.

He reported feeling humiliated and subjected to constant mockery and criticism, both online and offline. The situation escalated on May 25th with the spread of a false report, using a forged logo of an online media outlet, claiming his arrest for possession of 15 kilograms of heroin.

Mr. Hurreeram suspects a single individual orchestrated this smear campaign. His complaint names a Beau-Bassin resident as a potential suspect behind the Facebook profile.

He provided police with videos on a USB drive, screenshots, and a WhatsApp message as evidence. The police’s Information and Technology Unit has been notified, and an investigation is underway.
