Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Russian Federation remains ready to support Mauritius in its endeavour to counteract the issue of pollution and oil spill, reassured the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Mauritius, Mrs Irada Zeynalova.

She made this statement, today in Port-Louis, following a courtesy call she paid to the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Bhagwan.

Ambassador Zeynalova emphasised the critical importance of oil spill preparedness and response measures, warning that oil spills remain a serious environmental hazard with potentially disastrous consequences for marine and coastal ecosystems.

The Ambassador underscored the need to strengthen efforts in the fight against oceanic microplastic pollution which have harmful effects on the marine ecosystem. On that score, she advocated for the establishment of a microplastic laboratory in Mauritius to better monitor and assess the harmful impact of oceanic microplastic pollution on marine life.

Promoting new forms of air energy to protect the planet and ensure the well-being of present and future generations was also on the agenda.
