Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Government is acting responsibly by ensuring that citizens’ data is stored in a highly secure environment at the Mauritius Telecom (MT) Data Centre in Rose Belle, said the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul. He made this statement during a site visit conducted today at the MT Data Centre in Rose Belle.

Minister Ramtohul pointed out that Government data to be hosted at the MT Data Centre in Rose Belle will operate in conjunction with existing data housed at the Government Online Centre (GOC) in Ebène. The Government Blueprint for modernising the digital ecosystem outlines around 80 projects that require a robust IT infrastructure and reliable backup systems. It was therefore essential to establish an extension of the data centre currently located in Ebène, he said.

The Minister indicated that Government servers for new digital services will be hosted at the MT Data Centre in Rose Belle, a Tier 4 data facility capable of meeting requirements for the next five to seven years, as the data centre in Ebène is nearing full capacity. He further noted that storage demand may increase depending on the number of projects to be implemented.

According to Dr Ramtohul, the e-Health project, the new Government Portal, the mobile ID project as well as the software for the penalty point system, amongst others, will be accommodated at the MT Data Centre in Rose Belle. The hardware used for Artificial Intelligence applications for Government will also be stored there, he added.

The GOC, a pivotal department under the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, stands as a cornerstone of the Government’s digital infrastructure. Since its inception in May 2005, the GOC has evolved into a state-of-the-art centralised data centre, dedicated to delivering essential government services to citizens, businesses, Government officials and overseas non-citizens.

From its modest beginnings with just five server racks, the GOC has expanded exponentially, now boasting an 80-rack capacity for servers and equipment. The GOC is one of the few data centres in Mauritius with a robust infrastructure with a wide range of network complexities for catering for its stakeholders on a 24/7 basis.
