Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Service d’assistance médicale d’urgence (SAMU) Department of the New Souillac Hospital was inaugurated, this morning by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, in the in the context of World Patient Safety Day 2022.

The theme chosen by the World Health Organization (WHO) for this year is Medication Safety, with the slogan Medication Without Harm. The Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Dr Muhammad Ismaël Rawoo, the Regional Health Director of New Souillac Hospital, Dr Ismet Nawoor, and other personalities were present at the inauguration ceremony.

In a statement, Minister Jagutpal highlighted that the New Souillac Hospital is now equipped with a SAMU Department so as to offer better emergency services to the inhabitants residing in the south of the island, namely regions of Chemin Grenier, Baie du Cap and Le Morne.

The service has been running for the last five days and more than 10 interventions have already been carried out by the SAMU, he stated. The Minister emphasised that the waiting time will be significantly reduced now that the New Souillac Hospital has its own SAMU Department.

He also observed that the hospital ambulance is dispatched for minor cases, such as transportation of dialysis patients, but that the SAMU ambulance is sent when someone’s life is at stake and where each second counts.

Furthermore, Dr Jagutpal informed that the Specialist Service has been decentralised and is now available at the New Souillac Hospital. As such, patients no longer have to go to the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle to receive their medical treatment, he underlined.

As for PPS Rawoo, he underscored that the new SAMU Department as well as the decentralisation of the Specialist Service now offer more facilities to patients residing in the south of Mauritius.

These patients, he remarked, previously had to be taken care of at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. For his part, Dr Nawoor provided details regarding the services available at the New Souillac Hospital.

He added that the inhabitants of the south can now benefit from quality services offered by medical specialists more easily as they no longer have to travel long distances.
