Africa-Press – Mauritius. On August 26, commencing at 4:00p. m. (local time; August 27, 0:00a. m. JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan who is visiting Tunisia to attend the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8), held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with Hon.
Alan GANOO, Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of the Republic of Mauritius. The overview of the meeting is as follows. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude for Minister Ganoo’s participation in TICAD8.
Minister Hayashi stated his hope that, although the oil spill in August 2020 were to cause devastating damage on the economy of Mauritius, Japanese cooperation in the domain of maritime environmental protection and maritime accident prevention , as well as cooperation in the digital sector implemented in response to the accident will lead to economic recovery in Mauritius.
Minister Hayashi further stated that Japan looks forward to deepening the bilateral relations with Mauritius through the newly established bilateral committee on improvement of business environment. In response, Minister Ganoo expressed his condolences to former Prime Minister Abe, and Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude.
Minister Ganoo then expressed his appreciation for Japan’s extensive support, including COVID-19 countermeasures, and underscored the promotion of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” and the importance of maritime security. The both sides confirmed to work for further development of bilateral relations based on the outcome of TICAD 8.
Minister Hayashi then stated that it is essential for the international community to cooperate in its response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and that Japan intends to continue contributing to strengthening food security in Africa.
Minister Ganoo stated that he appreciates the support from Japan. Minister Hayashi also raised the importance of transparency and fairness of development finance and the two sides confirmed to cooperate with each other.
Furthermore, the two sides shared the view to continue to work together in responding to regional and international issues, such as climate change, North Korea, including on the nuclear, missile, and abductions issues, disarmament and non-proliferation, including cooperation in maintaining and strengthening the NPT regime, and strengthening of the functions of the United Nations as a whole, including the Security Council reform.
