Mauritius is set to be exemplary in the combat against climate change, affirms Environment Minister

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mauritius is set to be exemplary in the fight against climate change and envisions for a low carbon sustainable society in line with the Paris Agreement, said the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano.

He was speaking at the opening of a validation workshop on National Climate Change Mitigation Strategy and Action Plan for Mauritius (NCCMSAP) this morning, at Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis. The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mrs Christine Umotoni, and other personalities were also present.

In his address, Minister Ramano underlined that NCCMSAP has been developed under the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) for Low Carbon Island Development Strategy Project in December 2019 with the participation of various stakeholders.

He indicated that the Action Plan will play a major role in the promotion of low emission pathway for Mauritius and in achieving its set mitigation objectives, strategies and action plan. The country, he added, is on the right track for achieving a resilient and circular economy.

The Minister extended his gratitude to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre for their financial and technical support in formulation of the National Mitigation Strategy and Action Plan.

The support has been instrumental to help Mauritius to fulfil its commitment and develop the national strategy to mitigate climate change impacts, he stated.

The Minister spoke of the impacts of climate change, adding that the country continues to experience an increase in temperature by up to 1.4 degree Celsius and sea level rise at an accelerated rate of 5.6 mm per year and a general reduction of around 8% in the annual precipitation. He enumerated several bold initiatives being undertaken by Government to strengthen the country’s adaptive capacity.

They include: increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 60% by 2030 and phase out coal before 2030; decarbonise the energy and transport and enhance resilience in agriculture and tourism, under ‘Facilité 2050’ project; greening of the public sector; and the creation of new waste valorisation infrastructures.

Minister Ramano also recalled that the country has taken the commitment to provide an unconditional support of 35 percent share of its financial needs in the updated Nationally Determined Contribution, through Government and private sector contribution by 2030.

As for Mrs Umotoni, she stated that Mauritius will continue to abide by its commitments under the Paris Agreement and accelerate its climate action plans.

She commended the Government of Mauritius for its bold innovative approach in tackling the climate change crisis. She also highlighted that the United Nations remain a committed partner to support Mauritius in becoming a greener, cleaner and low carbon country.
