Metro Express Project: Last girder installed at Curepipe Central Station

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The installation of the last girder, which is the main horizontal structure or support beam used for the Metro Express Project and over which the light rail will be fixed, was effected, this afternoon, at the Curepipe Central Station.

As such, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Minister of Tourism, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo; the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo; the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metro Express Limited (Mauritius), Dr Das Mootanah; and other eminent personalities were present on site to witness the installation.

In a statement, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the current Metro Express Project is in its final phase of completion to reach Curepipe. He informed that Metro Express Limited (Mauritius) reassured that works will be completed by December 2022, despite difficulties faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Obeegadoo commended the work done so far by the various stakeholders involved in the project. He also reminded that a series of measures had to be implemented so as to enable the smooth running of the project.

For his part, Minister Ganoo expressed satisfaction with regards to the progress of works achieved as at date for the Metro Express Project and highlighted that the installation of girders represents another landmark in its realisation.

He indicated that a total of 24 girders were set up at Curepipe Central Station, while another 36 have been installed in the region of Curepipe. He nonetheless conceded that the completion of works, which was due in December 2021, has been rescheduled to December 2022 due to the two lockdowns following the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated that the Metro Express will be operational between Port Louis and Phoenix by mid 2022 and will reach Curepipe by December next year, before commending all those involved in the project.

As for the CEO of Metro Express Limited (Mauritius), he underlined that the Curepipe Central Station will be constructed while taking into account the climate of the region.

The Station, stressed Dr Mootanah, will be a modern one and will provide all the necessary facilities to commuters. It is expected that the Station will be operational in December 2022, he added.
