Africa-Press – Mauritius. Following the introduction of the Institute of Technical Education and Technology (ITET) Bill, some MITD (Mauritius Institute of Training and Development) centres are being revamped to cater for the reform in the technical training field.
The Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, thus effected various site visits, today, at five MITD training centres, in Port-Louis, Beau Bassin and Ebène. The aim was to assess all training institutes in the context of the introduction of the ITET.
Site visits covered the following training centres: the Knowledge Based Training Centre (ex B.A.T) in Port-Louis; the Sir Kher Jagatsingh Training Centre in Beau Bassin; and the School of Information Technology Communications & Electronics; the Sir Rampersad Neerunjun Training Centre; and the Ecole Hôtelière Sir Gaëtan Duval, in Ebène.
In a statement, Minister Callichurn emphasised that the aim of Government is to valorise trades and all measures introduced in the education and employment sectors are moving in that direction. He further highlighted that international models are moving towards promoting technical and vocational training.
The MITD, he recalled, has during the past five years, trained more than 80 000 students among whom more than 90% have found a productive job and are earning a good living today.
According to him, MITD training centres will be revamped to accommodate additional students after their studies and there are several centres which are already offering training facilities such as the MITD, Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd, Fashion and Design Institute, Ecole Hôtelière Sir Gaëtan Duval and Mauritius Maritime Training Academy.
Mr Callichurn announced that different courses in the fields of solar voltaic and green energy are being elaborated. While underscoring that there are several courses available for young people, he encouraged those who are not able to pursue their academic journey, to come join the technical, vocational and technological fields.
As regards employment, the Minister stated that there is a lack of skills-specific young labour. Some courses, he remarked, have been elaborated in a demand-driven way which means that once an individual has completed a course he will be guaranteed to secure a job on the labour market.
The MITD, a body corporate established under Act 12 of 2009 has taken over the activities of the ex-Industrial and Vocational Training Board (ex-IVTB) and part of the ex-Technical School Management Trust Fund (ex-TSMTF) as from 16 November 2009. It aims at providing and promoting innovative and quality learning and certification services for the development of a sustainable human capital.
