Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, effected, this morning, a site visit at Cavendish Bridge in Ville Noire, to take stock of the progress of ongoing major works for the refurbishment of the bridge.
The project kicked off in August 2021 and is expected to be completed by end of February 2022. The Member of Parliament, Mr Rameswar Doolub, was also present on the occasion.
In a statement, Minister Hurreeram highlighted that due to the degradation of the bridge structure, which was constructed in 1911 and now poses various safety hazards to pedestrians, rehabilitation works, to the tune of some Rs 37 million, are currently being undertaken to provide a safer and more secure pathway to them.
He underscored that the ongoing works aim at providing the bridge with all necessary safety aspects while preserving its historical cachet. He further added that almost 50% of works have been completed to date.
For his part, Mr Doolub expressed satisfaction with regards to the progress of works, which, once completed, will be beneficial to the inhabitants of the locality. He also observed that the works are being undertaken while preserving this historical site.
Rehabilitation works include: replacing existing wooden planks by treated timber boards and installing an anti-theft system; strengthening the footway metal supports; repairing the bridge expansion joints; fixing spalled concrete on the bridge structure; upgrading all drainage inlets; and repairing faulty luminaires. It is recalled that the Cavendish Bridge, the longest one in Mauritius, is classified as a potential heritage site by the National Heritage Fund.
