Africa-Press – Mauritius. On Tuesday, October 21, the Minister of Transport, Osman Mahomed, chaired a meeting in Port Louis to address concerns from licensed taxi operators at aéroport international Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Key stakeholders from the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA), Mauritius Police Force (MPF), Airports Terminal Operations Ltd (ATOL), and representatives from the General Taxi Owners’ Union were in attendance.

Also present were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, Ritesh Ramful, along with Members of Parliament Gilbert Tony Apollon and Chitraduthsing Lukeeram. The meeting aimed to assess the challenges faced by these taxi operators and find solutions to combat illegal taxi services.

Following the issues raised by airport taxis, Osman Mahomed emphasized the need to strengthen the deployment of NLTA and MPF agents to monitor and report effectively on illegal taxi operations.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of activating existing cameras to detect unauthorized transport services at the airport. Other key proposals included enhanced signage to direct passengers toward official taxi stands and the introduction of uniforms to improve the visibility of airport taxis.

A site visit with major stakeholders is planned to further evaluate the situation of licensed taxis at the airport.
