Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ministry of Health and Wellness, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote early detection and prevention of eye diseases, organised, on 13 December 2025, a Glaucoma Screening Programme at the SAJ Hospital in Flacq.

In this context, two medical experts, namely Dr Patrick Yu Wai Man, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Cambridge and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Dr Cynthia Yu Wai Man, Assistant Professor and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King’s College London, are currently in Mauritius to collaborate with the Ministry for this screening campaign.

In a statement, Dr Patrick Yu Wai Man indicated that glaucoma, which is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve may present no symptoms, thereby underscoring the importance of its early detection.

For her part, Dr Cynthia Yu Wai Man highlighted that although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be effectively controlled through appropriate treatment, including eye drops and laser therapy. She further indicated that Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is available at the New Subramania Bharati Eye Hospital.

The two ophthalmologists will also conduct training sessions for medical doctors and nurses at the New Eye Hospital, thus contributing to capacity building within the local healthcare system.
