MITD Graduates: Minister Callichurn launches ‘Maintenance Pro App’

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The ‘Maintenance Pro App’, to connect employers and the public to a database of graduates from the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD), was launched, today, by the Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, in Moka.

The launching was held during the graduation ceremony organised for MITD students at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The Chairperson of the MITD, Mr Harrykrishna Vydelingum; the Acting Director of the MITD, Mr Sayadaly Maudarbocus; and other personalities were present on this occasion.

Minister Callichurn highlighted that very often, enterprises and the public find it difficult to seek the services of qualified technicians and as such the App will provide all necessary details about MITD graduates, with the latter’s consent, so as to increase their visibility to the public and enable them to be employed more easily.

The Minister moreover commended the efforts and successes of the present cohort of graduates, of around 761 students, who received their Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) certificate following all the hard work, perseverance and commitment they have put in despite the difficult COVID-19 pandemic situation.

He observed that TVET has become more important than ever in a bid to address the rampant youth unemployment issue since the training can help minimise skills mismatch which disproportionately affect young people in developing countries.

Furthermore, the Minister underscored that, as skills mismatch is a daunting challenge even in Mauritius, Government has placed TVET high on its agenda. Government, he stated, believes in providing adequate training to young people so that they can become the flag-bearers of tomorrow.

He also remarked that one cannot remain insensitive when we know that not all Mauritian children get the same chances in life, depending on the social background of families they come from, and it is Government’s duty to reduce this gap.

As such, he reminded that as announced in the Budget 2022/23, examination fees have been waived for MITD trainees and the administration fee for full-time courses has also been waived for MITD trainees registered under the Social Register of Mauritius.

In addition, Government is working with the private sector to put in place a successful TVET system which is relevant to the labour market, widens access to trainees, encompasses quality-training delivery and involves participation of stakeholders, he added. Both Messrs Vydelingum and Maudarbocus commended the graduates and their parents for their success, efforts and sacrifices.

Mr Vydelingum also outlined that the MITD has already embarked on new training projects for 2023, such as a certificate in: solar energy technology; entrepreneurship; artificial intelligence and robotics; interactive and digital media; and software development. He further stated that these courses will enable participants to be prepared to evolve in emerging fields of the future.
