Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mr Elgar Freddis Kising, born at Ligne Berthaud on 15 August 1922, celebrated his 100th birthday, yesterday, at La Caverne Community Centre in Vacoas.
In this context, an official ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian.
On this occasion, Mr Kising received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 21,836; another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; and one certificate.
The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Serge Gilbert Bablee, other personalities and the close relatives of Mr Kising were present at the event. Mr Elgar Freddis Kising was born at Ligne Berthaud in Vacoas on the 15 August 1922.
His father was a carpenter and his mother was a housewife. Mr Kising had two brothers and two sisters, and he studied up to Standard 6. He started working at a young age as a charcoal burner before joining the army for the Second World War.
He then got married to Mrs Marguerite Clemencia, who was a housewife, at the age of 22. The couple had three sons and one daughter. Mr Kising has eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He loves reading and walks around with the help of a walking stick. He is lucid and enjoys a good health. Moreover, Mr Kising is well-known for treating people with herbal medicines. He is spiritual and dedicates his longevity to his faith in God. The centenarian has been living with his daughter for the past 30 years.
Latest statistics from the Welfare and Elderly Persons’ Protection Unit of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity reveal that the Republic of Mauritius has recorded, as at 16 August 2022, a total of 174 centenarians from Mauritius and Rodrigues.
In Mauritius, the number of female and male centenarians stands at 140 and 22 respectively while in Rodrigues, the number of centenarians recorded are 10 females and two males.
