Africa-Press – Mauritius. The agreement between the Mauritian government and the United Kingdom concerning the Chagos Archipelago remains a focal point of political debate. At a press conference on May 30th, Mahen Seeruttun, a member of the MSM’s economic commission, voiced his party’s concerns regarding the agreement’s content, accusing the government of concealing the truth from the public.
Seeruttun questioned whether the UK possesses veto power over projects in the archipelago, excluding Diego Garcia. He directly asked if the Mauritian government granted the UK the right to refuse any proposed projects, demanding a clear response.
This highlights the MSM’s apprehension about potential limitations on Mauritius’ sovereignty. Seeruttun also criticized the upcoming budget, citing diminishing public confidence and broken promises regarding lower medication and fuel prices.
He warned of a potential increase in household gas prices. He further urged the government to maintain social welfare allocations established by the previous administration.
Bobby Hurreeram, also present at the press conference, supported Seeruttun’s statements, echoing concerns about the country’s reserves and criticizing certain budgetary decisions.
They pointedly criticized the government’s spending, highlighting the existence of a minister without portfolio and four advisors as evidence of wasteful expenditure. Seeruttun concluded by asserting that the MSM, had it been in power, would have fulfilled its pre-election commitments.
The press conference underscores the MSM’s opposition to the Chagos agreement and its broader criticism of the government’s economic policies and management of public funds.
