New Traffic Scheme to be devised for part of Rose Hill, states Minister Ganoo

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A new Traffic Scheme will have to be devised for part of Rose Hill, especially in the vicinity of Notre Dame de Lourdes RCA and Saint Enfant Jesus RCA schools following the construction of a commercial and residential building in this area.

The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, made this statement, this morning, following a site visit at Notre Dame de Lourdes RCA school in Rose Hill.

The aim of the visit was to take stock of the arrangements currently being made by the Traffic Management Road Safety Unit (TMRSU) to ensure safety of children in this region.

The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mrs Marie Alexandra Tania Diolle, and other personalities were also present for the site visit.

Minister Ganoo highlighted that the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail will soon organise a multi-stakeholder meeting with representatives of the Mauritius Police Force, the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin/Rose Hill, and the TMRSU, among others, so as to elaborate the new Traffic Scheme which aims at better regulating traffic in this region.

He reminded that one of the objectives of the TMRSU, operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail, is to ensure that all amenities are provided along roads so as to ensure the safety of citizens.

Furthermore, he remarked that the commercial and residential building being constructed between the two primary schools in Rose Hill may affect traffic flow in the vicinity.

As such, he pointed out, the TMRSU will have to make some arrangements and work in collaboration with the commercial and residential building’s promoter so as to guarantee safety of road users.

One of the measures currently being implemented, underscored Minister Ganoo, is the setting up of a layby/drop-off area which spans over a length of some 27 metres in front of Notre Dame de Lourdes RCA school.

He indicated that it is also proposed to install traffic lights as well as raised platforms so as to regulate the traffic in this area, while some suggestions have also been made by stakeholders present during the site visit.

Same will be studied by the concerned authorities, he added. For her part, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo stated that the site visit mainly aimed at taking stock of the measures to be implemented so as to ensure security of children of the two primary schools.

She also stressed on the need to review the traffic scheme in the region. As for PPS Diolle, she emphasised that advice should be sought from experts and relevant stakeholders in a bid to guarantee the safety of road users in the region. She further expressed confidence that necessary works will soon be carried out.
