Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards: Top Achievers in Mauritius receive prizes

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mauritian awardees of the 14th edition of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards received their prizes, today, during an official ceremony, organised by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka. The award ceremony was followed by the opening of the annual Art Exhibition.

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; the Head of Education Services of the Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean, Cambridge Assessment International Education, Mr Waleed Bagadi; and other personalities were present on this occasion.

In her address, Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun highlighted that the 121 students, receiving either the Cambridge Top in Mauritius or the High Achievement awards, along with the 15 students receiving Cambridge Top in the World awards, from 30 schools, were clear evidence that Mauritian candidates could successfully compete with other candidates worldwide.

According to her, this was also a sign of sound competition that existed in the education system which encouraged learners to give the best of themselves.

The Vice-Prime Minister expressed satisfaction as excellence had been reached in a wide range of subjects such as accounting, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science, economics, business studies and mathematics.

She also dwelt on the necessity to keep benchmarking the education system to the international level so as to ensure that students do their best to excel in their fields.

Furthermore, Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun underscored that the Cambridge Assessment International Education had been working with Mauritius for more than a century and continued to work closely with the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate with a view to bringing out the best in every student.

She seized this opportunity to advise the awardees to make the right choice for their future career because of the complexity, volatility and unpredictability of the world.

“Our young people must thus be resilient and the education system in which they evolve has to ensure that their resilience is properly built up”, she emphasised.

In addition, the Vice-Prime Minister recalled the difficult circumstances in which examinations were held due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that Mauritian students had nonetheless been able to shine.

She recalled that her Ministry had been and would remain dedicated to ensure that necessary means were put at the disposal of young people to give them all the required support.

For his part, Mr Bagadi commended the awardees for their outstanding performance, as well as the winners’ parents and teachers for their efforts and support. He observed that Cambridge Assessment International Education offered a wide range of qualifications, created for an international audience.

Mr Bagadi also remarked that the Cambridge Assessment International Education qualifications were taken in some 150 countries and were recognised by universities, educational providers and employers around the world. Cambridge Top in the World and Top in Mauritius awards

Students were presented with the Cambridge Top in the World and the Cambridge Top in Mauritius awards where they achieved the highest mark in the world and in Mauritius, respectively, at O, A and AS Level in any subject. Moreover, the High Achievement Award was conferred to students who achieved outstanding results in subjects with a low candidature.

Students who have scored top grades in examinations set by Cambridge Assessment International Education can rightly be proud of their achievements and be confident that these grades will be welcomed by some of the most prestigious universities and employers around the world.
