Africa-Press – Mauritius. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President of the Republic of Seychelles, Patrick Herminie, scheduled for this Sunday. The event marks a significant political transition for the island nation and will gather prominent international figures to witness the moment.
Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony will be India’s Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan, who will be making his first official trip abroad since taking office last month. Patrick Herminie secured victory in the Seychellois presidential election, defeating incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan in the second round with 52.7 percent of the votes against 47.3 percent. His win marks the return of the United Seychelles party to power.
The United Seychelles party previously led the country for more than four decades, from 1977 until its defeat in 2020. In his victory speech, Herminie expressed deep gratitude for the trust shown by the Seychellois people and vowed to serve with dedication and a strong belief in the resilience of the nation. Before his election, Herminie served as Speaker of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2016.
Meanwhile, Mauritius was represented by a First Secretary from its embassy in Antananarivo at the swearing-in of Colonel Michaël Randrianirina as head of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar. The ceremony followed a dramatic military takeover triggered by widespread youth-led protests that forced President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country.
Following Rajoelina’s ousting, the new leadership dissolved both the National Assembly and the Senate, with Randrianirina taking the oath before the judges of the High Constitutional Court. The African Union (AU) has condemned the military’s actions as unconstitutional and suspended Madagascar from the organization. However, this did not prevent AU member states from sending representatives to the ceremony.
