Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger attended a convivial onion harvesting ceremony yesterday at the Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB) headquarters in La Chaumière. The event, organized by the La Chaumière Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd, brought together several government officials, including Aadil Ameer Meea, Minister of Industry, SMEs and Cooperatives; Rajesh Bhagwan, Minister of Environment; Deven Nagalingum, Minister of Sports; and Fabrice David, Junior Minister of Agro-Industry.

In his address, Paul Bérenger paid tribute to the historical contribution of farmers to the nation’s development, emphasizing their enduring role in shaping Mauritius’ economic and social fabric. “We owe them a debt of gratitude. History acknowledges their contribution,” he stated, reiterating the vital importance of the agricultural and cooperative sectors in sustaining the country’s progress and resilience.

Earlier, Minister Aadil Ameer Meea highlighted the mission of cooperative societies, describing them as “forces that fight poverty while preserving the dignity of planters.” He noted that there are currently 1,400 active cooperatives across the island, gathering around 87,000 members. Among them, approximately 150 agricultural cooperatives represent about 2,100 planters, showing the enduring strength of the cooperative movement.

Founded in 1967, the La Chaumière Cooperative Society continues to cultivate mainly onions and potatoes across 63 arpents of land. Its longevity demonstrates the ongoing relevance of cooperative models in the Mauritian economy. In a notable moment, Bérenger expressed his respect for press freedom—when one of his bodyguards began restricting access to journalists, he reacted immediately with a smile: “Never block the press!”—a statement warmly received by those present.

In a lighthearted aside, Bérenger also commented humorously on the recent resignation of Kishore Beegoo from the Air Mauritius board. When asked by reporters, he replied with a grin: “Beegoo? Do you know the lady at the Registrar of Cooperative Societies who chaired so brilliantly? Her name is Madam Beegoo! That’s life!” The quip reflected Bérenger’s trademark wit and his preference to treat internal turbulence at the national airline with levity rather than criticism.
