
Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister participated this Wednesday, September 21, 2022 in the very first meeting of the Global Group of Heads of State and Government for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.
This is an event jointly organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Mr. Pravind Jugnauth was part of the panel of speakers alongside the President of Ghana, Mr.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of WHO, Michael Bloomberg, Founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Ambassador of WHO and former mayor of New York.
During this round table, the Prime Minister reported on the initiatives taken in Mauritius to contain the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. To this end, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth presented the awareness and education strategy aimed at the entire population. Mr.
Pravind Jugnauth also explained that the government puts a lot of emphasis on screening campaigns at the national level in order to detect certain types of disease and risky behaviors.
Mauritius also regularly updates the legal framework aimed at containing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Mauritius will soon be promulgating a new framework of Food Regulations which will be in line with the recommendations of Codex Alimentarus, FAO and WHO.
Mauritius is working in collaboration with the WHO on the project to create the Mauritius Food Standards Agency. This agency will be responsible for advising the government on nutritional security.
The government, on the other hand, is stepping up its prevention of smoking and alcohol with, in particular, initiatives such as the upcoming introduction of plain packaging. Mr.
Pravind Jugnauth also spoke of the government’s desire to promote alternative medicine with the upcoming construction of an AYUSH Center of Excellence with the collaboration of the Indian government.
The head of government welcomed the conclusions of the latest Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Survey which show that the prevalence of diabetes and the rate of people with prediabetic conditions have decreased, compared to 2015.
