Prime Minister takes stock of progress of infrastructural works following torrential rain

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, effected, today, site visits at Vallée Pitot, Fond du Sac, Cottage, Mapou and Camp Thorel following torrential rains that poured over the island on 26 and 27 January 2023.

In a statement, Prime Minister Jugnauth said that the purpose of the visits was to take stock of the situation following the heavy rainfall and to ensure that infrastructural works and flood mitigation projects carried out in those regions have helped during the torrential rains.

He observed heavy accumulation of water in several areas, and riverine floods across the island following the heavy rainfall. Government, he pointed out, has invested significantly in several infrastructural and upgrading projects with the view of mitigating flood risks during heavy rainfalls in the country and more particularly in flood-prone areas as witnessed in the past.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction as regards the effectiveness of the implemented infrastructure works in those impacted regions following the site visits.

He also reiterated Government’s priority to continue undertaking other infrastructure projects across the island to ensure the security of the citizens.

Several Ministers were also present at the different sites, namely the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; the Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo; the Attorney-General and Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin; the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Hurreeram; the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah; and the Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck. The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Dr Anjiv Ramdhany, attended the site visits as well.
