Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Mauritius Turf Club reports that the Stewards of the Horse Racing Division held an inquiry into the handling of Master Mariner (4th race – 14th meeting) after which jockey Bernard Fayd’herbe was suspended for 10 race meetings.
He has been sanctioned under Rule 208 (a), which states: ”a jockey shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field”.
Another Cape jockey in Anthony Andrews has been doing outstandingly well, but has also fallen foul of the stewards. After being suspended for 3 days for his ride on Padre Pio, he received a 4-month suspension for his ride on Charlie Squadron on the 16th day.
Andrews was sanctioned under Rule 208 (a) which states: ”When riding in a race, a jockey shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given the full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible place in the field.
Earlier he had paid the price for rule 208 (b):”When riding in a race, a jockey shall not excessively slow, reduce or check the speed of his horse, thereby causing interference directly or indirectly to any other horse in the race.
” The Sporting Post believes that there may be appeals pending.
With two different racing operators, the island racing may have lost some of its appeal with SA racing fans, who are confused by the broadcasting of alternate racemeetings, dependant on contracts with the hosts. Locally, GallopTV and 4Racing TV have the rights to broadcast all Mauritius Turf Club races and these are currently broadcast.
GallopTV’s Wesley Lloyd confirmed to the Sporting Post that efforts had been made to take the People’s Turf Club feed for the convenience of our local racing fans, but that efforts in that regard had not yet been fruitful.
In much the same vein, 4Racing spokesman Jermaine Craig told the Sporting Post that they are in discussions with the People’s Turf Club to broadcast and bet on their meetings, and were hopeful of formalising this soon.
