"Stag party": the opposition calls for the resignation of the PPS and the minister

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Allegations made against Maneesh Gobin, the Minister of Agribusiness and Attorney General, and his running mate, Rajanah Dhaliah, also Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), have been commented on at length by opposition MPs yesterday, Monday, April 3.

Xavier-Luc Duval, the leader of the opposition and of the Mauritian Social Democratic Party, describes the affair as a “stag party”. “The opposition wants the resignation of Maneesh Gobin and Rajanah Dhaliah, while the investigation is done.

It is inconceivable that there is a big accusation and an investigation against the minister when he is still in possession of all the documents”, hammered the leader of the opposition.

Xavier-Luc Duval is supported in his statements by Paul Bérenger, the leader of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). Moreover, Nando Bodha, the leader of the Mauritian Rassemblement, says that he was present at a meeting that led to the dismissal of Ivan Collendavelloo.

“The minister and the PPS must resign. If they don’t want to, they have to be removed. Ivan Collendavelloo left because of a line with his name only on a piece of paper,” he recalls.

The leader of the Labor Party, Arvin Boolell, returned to him on other ministers and Attorney General who had to leave. He cited the case of Raj Dayal and Ravi Yerrigadoo.

“Maneesh Gobin is a Minister, Attorney General and member of the Bar Council. This is what happens in the MSM culture. It is not because he is the general secretary of the MSM that he should not resign”, he insists.

The elected representative of the Labor Party finds it unacceptable that the minister went to the Grand-Bassin site for a party while his ministry is negotiating to renew the lease.

The Leader of the Opposition has promised that he will return with a Private Notice Question on this subject next week, that MPs will also ask questions on this whole affair and that Maneesh Gobin will be obliged to answer according to the standing order. 21.

In addition, Xavier-Luc Duval hopes that during this morning’s session, the speaker will take a strong position against the gesture of Alan Ganoo and Pravind Jugnauth.

The first named had slipped the head of government a photo of Jasmine Toulouse, singer and former MMM candidate, showing her with Jean Hubert Celerine.

The Prime Minister had not hesitated to brandish it. “It does them no credit,” regrets the leader of the opposition. Paul Bérenger also wants a strong position from the announcer against the two men for their act, which he describes as cowardice.

Regarding the additional budget of Rs 5.4 billion, Xavier-Luc Duval recalls that Rs 5 billion will be paid to a state company for the construction of houses.

“We are not against the construction of houses, but contracts of Rs 24 billion will be allocated without going through the Procurement Act,” he said.
