Africa-Press – Mauritius. In the context of the forthcoming celebrations of the Thaipoosam Cavadee festival, the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage launched, on 31 January 2023 in Port Louis, a booklet to promote the Kanthar Alangāram.
The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, and other personalities were present at the launching ceremony. In his address, Minister Teeluck commended the Tamil Speaking Union for coming up with this promotion booklet.
It is recalled that the Kanthar Alangāram (the poetical adornment of Skanda) is a sacred treatise composed in the 15th Century by Saint Arunagirinathar in Tiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu).
The Minister highlighted that the launching of this booklet comes at an opportune time as the Thaipoosam Cavadee will be celebrated on 04 February 2023. He dwelt on the importance of promoting the Tamil language and culture, as well as the various languages and cultures present in Mauritius.
Furthermore, Minister Teeluck appealed to representatives of the various Tamil organisations present at the launching ceremony to continue to work towards the promotion and preservation of the Tamil culture.
The launching of this promotion booklet of the Kanthar Alangāram is in line with the Tamil Speaking Union to: promote the Tamil language in its spoken and written forms; promote and encourage the publication, exhibition, distribution and sale of Tamil books, magazines, newspapers and other literary works; as well as promote and encourage the linguistic development among persons having an interest in the Tamil language with special emphasis on the cultural, artistic, economic and social perspectives of the language.
Some 7,500 copies of the promotion booklet, 250 CDs and 200 pen drives will all be distributed free of charge in every Kovil around the island. A YouTube version has also been made available.
