Trade Deficit Narrows Amid August 2025 Export Growth

Africa-Press – Mauritius. According to the latest data from Statistics Mauritius for August 2025, Mauritius experienced a decline in both exports and imports compared to June 2025. The country’s trade deficit stood at Rs 17,814 million, which is a decrease of 22.3% compared to July 2025 and an 8.2% decrease compared to August 2024.

Exports for August 2025 reached Rs 8,982 million, an increase of 2.8% from Rs 8,739 million in July 2025, yet they were 8.3% lower than in August 2024. This growth in exports from July to August spans all sectors. Meanwhile, total imports rose to Rs 26,796 million in August, up from Rs 23,307 million in July. The increase in imports was observed across various sectors, including machinery, chemicals, food and live animals, beverages and tobacco, mineral fuels, lubricants, and manufactured goods.

Overall, while exports showed a slight recovery from the previous month, the trade deficit has narrowed due to the relative decreases compared to previous periods, signaling some improvements in the external trade balance despite ongoing challenges in import demands and sectoral variations.
