Africa-Press – Mauritius. A two-day training on ‘Implementing Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS): A Practical Approach’, was launched, yesterday, at the SICOM Building 2, in Port Louis, in the presence of the Minister of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms, Dr Anjiv Ramdhany.

The objective of this training programme is to provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to properly implement the OSHMS based on international practices as well as creating a work environment conducive to enhance productivity.

Moreover, this course will help participants to namely: identify the benefit and understand the international standards of OSHMS; monitor, evaluate and enhance performances and; drive the OSHMS.

In his address, Minister Ramdhany highlighted that his Ministry is committed to ensure the safety and health of its public officers and added that the OSH Unit of his Ministry has an important role to play in promoting the safety and health of the public service at large.

Furthermore, he indicated that this training is in line with the Government policy to provide public service officers with a safer and healthier environment adding that the implementation of the OSHMS has already started across the public service.

Today’s training will ensure proper materialisation of the system as it aims to improve the capability, capacity and performance of participants leading to a safe and healthy oriented behaviour, Dr Ramdhany remarked.

The Minister also mentioned that it is increasingly acknowledged that OSHMS should be performed systematically and continually and the major strategy to achieve this is by implementing an OSHMS. He affirmed that investment in human resource development is essential to providing better services to the public.

On this note, Minister Ramdhany underlined that there is a need to systematically expand training and development across the public service and to public officers irrespective of their grades and status so that they are gradually groomed to act safely.

Minister Ramdhany encouraged the full collaboration of all participants through this training for the implementation of the OSHMS as trained public officers may have an imperial role to play in creating the required safety climate.
