A total of 67 scholarships were awarded to the wards of registered fishers of Mauritius and Rodrigues who have successfully completed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (Normal and Extended Stream), the Post National Certificate of Education, the School Certificate examination, the Higher School Certificate examination as well as Vocational Studies.
In this context, an award ceremony was organised by the Fishermen Welfare Fund (FWF) on 31 January 2026 at the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy in Pointe Aux Sables, in presence of the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Arianne Navarre-Marie.
Junior Ministers Mr Fabrice David and Mr Kugan Parapen, and the Ambassador of the European Union to Mauritius, Mr Oskar Benedikt, were also present on the occasion.
The scholarship scheme was first introduced in 1991 by the Government. It aims to provide financial assistance to children of fishermen so that they can pursue their educational pathways. Around 168 scholarships are offered each year to cater for the children of the fishers.
In his address Minister Boolell pointed out that the scholarship award is line with Government’s engagement to democratise access to education and empower those who are in need of financial support. He underlined the importance of the fishermen community as a key pillar of the blue economy and acknowledged its significant contribution to the country’s economic development.
He also highlighted various support measures implemented for the welfare of fishermen and their families, namely financial assistance for accidentally damaged boats, aid for families in distress, the Winter Allowance, and the Computer Scheme, while reiterating Government’s commitment to developing the blue economy in a sustainable manner.
Fishermen Welfare Fund
The Fund, established under the FWF Act No. 28 of 2000 and operating since May 2001, is a corporate body under the Ministry of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries. Its mission is to promote the social and economic welfare of registered fishers and their families in Mauritius and Rodrigues through various support schemes.
