Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, participated, this morning, in a walk along at the Moka SENRDC.
The event was held in the context of the TAFISA World Walking Day. Launched in 1991, the Day aims at promoting walking as a simple and fun way of being physically active and celebrates Sport for All against the global crisis of physical inactivity.
In a statement, the VPM emphasised on the need for the young population to be informed of the importance of walking as an exercise to keep them fit and healthy. Mrs Dookun-Luchoomun dwelt on the numerous health benefits associated with walking as a physical activity, namely an improved blood circulation.
Speaking about the initiative, she said that it is geared towards fostering a sports culture among the students, and encouraging them to adopt walking or any other physical activity as part of their routine.
The VPM also pointed out that while engaging into such group activities, students will be prompted to interact with their friends which in turn will hone their social skills.
