Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique Airlines (LAM) on Monday suspended several domestic flights due to tropical storm Ana, affecting the north and centre of the country.

Due to “heavy rain and strong winds, today’s flights to the northern region and some cities in the central area are cancelled,” the company announced.

The cancellation of flights covers Nampula, Nacala and Pemba, in northern Mozambique and Quelimane, Tete and Chimoio, in the centre.

LAM will update its schedules depending on the evolution of the tropical storm.

A low-pressure zone intensified as it passed through the Mozambique Channel during Sunday, turning into tropical storm Ana before hitting the coast in the Angoche district.

“Heavy rains could cause flash flooding and landslides, hitting the interior of Mozambique from this afternoon and then much of southern Malawi overnight,” according to the French weather centre on Reunion Island.

In the current storm season (from October to April), at least 14 people have died, and another 53,269 have been affected by natural disasters, according to the latest report by Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).
