Limpopo Park registers zero elephant and rhino poaching in the last three years

Africa-PressMozambique. Poaching is no longer a problem in the Limpopo National Park (PNL) in Gaza, with the reduction of poaching, especially of elephants and rhinos, to zero in the last three years.

The information was provided last week by the administrator of the Limpopo National Park, Francisco Pariela, who associated the end of the killing with the reinforcement of inspections and investment in patrol means such as vehicles, helicopters and light aircraft, in addition to improvements in the telecommunications system.

Pariela said that the statistics cited represent the situation since 2018, with the intensification of inspection in areas with the highest concentration of animal population, thanks to the collaboration of rangers from Kruger Park, in South Africa.

“Poaching is under control, if we take into account what was common between the years 2008 and 2015,” Pariela said. “Our colleagues at Kruger Park recognise us as the most organised in combating poaching strategies. In 2015 and 2016, we often found dead individuals, both in the Kruger region and on the Mozambican side, but this is no longer observed. Before, there were reports of deaths of young people involved in poaching. We have still registered movements of young people towards South Africa, but our research found that they are mainly individuals looking for work and better living conditions.”
