Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least 17 Malawian citizens have been arrested for illegally staying in the country and suspicion of illegal logging and gold mining in Chimbonila district, Niassa province, northern Mozambique, the provincial director of migration said on Monday.
“To say that the number was actually 36, the total, when we did our screening, we ended up dismissing the others because the others are nationals. (…) This screening actually resulted in only 17 Malawian citizens, all of them illegally. We have 16 men and one woman, all of whom are detained here,” said Fernando Armando, director of the National Migration Service (SENAMI) in Niassa, quoted by the media yesterday.
The detention of the foreigners on Saturday, Armando explained, resulted from a tip off by locals in the Macassangilo area of Chimbonila district, where the suspects were allegedly illegally exploiting national resources, in addition to cultivating crops in the region.
