Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission of the Kingdom of Norway in Mozambique, Sissel Idland, and the representative of the United Nations Women’s Organization (UN-Women), Marié Kayisirei, launched the initiative ‘She Leads Peace: Consolidating the Participation and Meaningful Leadership of Women and Girls in Peace, Security and Recovery (2025–2027)’ yesterday (08-07) in Maputo.
Budgeted at US$2.3 million, the initiative aims to strengthen women’s participation in peacebuilding in Mozambique.
The Minister Counsellor of the Kingdom of Norway in Mozambique praised the participants at the event, which was marked by the signing of a new financing package between the Norwegian government and UN Women.
“Mozambique faces complex challenges. Conflicts, displacement, climate shocks, and political instability are just a few examples, but they also inspire us, because with the leadership of Mozambican women, even in difficult situations, they resolve conflicts, support communities, and help build,” she said.
Sissel Idland noted that the project supports the continuation of previous efforts approved by Norway and will open up more sub-units for leadership, economic security, and local pathways.
“Our strategy for Africa is inclusive governance and peace at the local level. Our social action plan on women, peace, and security 2023-2060 commits women to an active role in the recovery,” he said.
In turn, the UN Women representative in Mozambique, Marié Kayistei, emphasized that both entities are meeting today (08-07) to renew and celebrate their commitment to women, peace, and the security agenda in Mozambique.
“This agenda is crucial for building sustainable peace and gender justice, where girls have access to equal opportunities in contexts of humanitarian crisis. The project will work closely with traditional leaders and public institutions to address gender norms and ensure that women have a voice in decisions that affect their lives,” she stressed.
