Tanzania pledges support against terrorism

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Hamad Khamis, the High Commissioner of Tanzania in Mozambique, has guaranteed that his country is continuing its support for the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) in the fight against islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

According to Khamis – who was speaking to reporters on Monday, in Maputo, after a meeting with Margarida Talapa, chairperson of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic – Tanzania has never left Mozambique alone in the fight against terrorism, “therefore Tanzanian forces remain on the ground, cooperating directly with the Mozambican authorities, especially in the border areas between the two countries.”

“Tanzania is collaborating closely with Mozambique. We have troops in northern Mozambique operating alongside Mozambican forces. We are aware of the challenges in that region and also in southern Tanzania, where a group continues to create instability. That’s why Tanzania is standing firm alongside Mozambique to eliminate this threat”, he said.

The diplomat guaranteed that although the mandate of the Southern African Development Community Military Mission (SAMIM) expired last July, Tanzania did not withdraw its support for Mozambique and remains committed to regional security.

SAMIM was set up on 15 July 2021, following approval by an Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Governments with the aim of supporting the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in the fight against terrorism.

According to Hamad, during his meeting with Talapa, they both agreed there is a need to strengthen cultural ties through the creation of a Mozambique-Tanzania Cultural Centre.

“We are working on a project to inaugurate the cultural centre, which will include teaching Swahili. We already offer classes to Mozambican journalists. Swahili is a Bantu language recognized by UNESCO and we want more Mozambicans to be able to learn it”, he said.

“We also want to boost bilateral cooperation in the social, energy, tourism, security and transport sectors. This cooperation includes strengthening relations between our two legislative institutions”, he added.
