Five arrested for theft of medicines in Manica

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has arrested five individuals allegedly involved in the theft of medicines belonging to the National Health System (SNS), in the central province of Manica.

According to Paulo Candeeiro, the SERNIC spokesperson in Manica, the case involves health workers and security guards at the warehouse where the medicines are stored.

“A lot of medicine is on the black market. There are still more people involved in the case. The authorities are working in order to find them all and hold them criminally accountable”, he said.

Candeeiro explained that the detainees used to turn off the surveillance cameras at night, making it easier for them to carry out their criminal actions.

“At the end of each operation, the other members of the group would receive payments ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 meticais (between 75 and 150 dollars, at the current exchange rate). The stolen medicine was found at the home of one of the gang members, from which they were later transported for sale in the main informal markets in Chimoio”, said Candeeiro.
