Africa-Press – Mozambique. Another illegal artisanal miner has died in a mine collapse in the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession area, MRM announced in a press release on Monday.

MRM was informed of the fatality in the early hours of Thursday, November 11. The victim, who was born in Mueda district, was living in Nanhupo village, in Montepuez district.

The communique tells that three other miners escaped the incident, two unharmed and one with minor injuries.

According to the MRM, nine illegal miners have died due to mine collapses in the area since January.

The company is concerned about the constant fatal incidents involving illegal miners in its area. “The growing number of incidents, attacks and fatalities involving illegal miners in the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession is a major concern for the company and local communities, whose villages are under pressure due to the influx of illegal miners from distant towns, neighbouring provinces and other countries,” MRM has commented.

The MRM operations are located in Namanhumbir administrative post, Montepuez district, in southern Cabo Delgado province.

Covering an area of 34,966 hectares, the Montepuez ruby deposit is believed to be the most significant recently discovered ruby deposit in the world. MRM is 75% owned by Gemfields and 25% owned by local Mozambican minority partner, Mwriti Limitada.
