Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least 5,000 students from 25 Mozambican universities will receive free laptops this year, as part of a government programme to distribute more than 20,000 of the devices, the government announced yesterday.

“The government, with the support of the World Bank, is implementing the ‘One Laptop, One Higher Education Student’ programme for needy higher education students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Prime Minister Benvinda Levi of Mozambique said during the ceremony to distribute the first batch of computers in Maputo.

In the first phase of the programme, 5,000 laptops would be distributed to students selected in a “transparent and competitive” process, the prime minister explained.

“The distribution of these laptops will cover students from 25 higher education institutions throughout the country that offer courses in the above-mentioned areas,” she elaborated.

Benvinda Levi added that the second phase of the program could see as many as 20,000 computers distributed throughout the country.

The “One Computer, One Higher Education Student” program is a Mozambican government initiative, announced in 2021, that aims to promote the digitization of higher education and improve students’ IT skills.
