Bankruptcy of Organic Sugar Plant Ecofarm Leaves 800 Unemployed

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The bankruptcy of the organic sugar plant EcoFarm, a company opened in 2019, has left at least 800 workers unemployed, part of a total of 1,500 layoffs registered in Sofala province since January.

The figures were revealed by the provincial executive secretary of the OTM-Central Sindical [Mozambique Workers’ Organization] in Sofala, Bento Gotine, who, without providing comparative data in relation to last year, enumerated problems in the employment sector such as mass layoffs, salary delays, and payment of wages below the minimum wage.

“Sofala province currently has two companies in a state of insolvency, namely Cimentos da Beira and EcoFarm. More than a thousand workers are currently affected and have not been paid,” Gotine reported.

“As workers’ representatives, we are not happy with the situation. We have had access to the EcoFarm case and are following up on it. It is this company’s responsibility to compensate the workers,” he said.

Gotine also discussed the plan to set up a vocational training centre in Beira, with a view to improving the technical skills of workers and others.

“If we have the centre in Beira, it will be of great value not only for OTM-Central Sindical but also for the province and society. We are currently studying, together with our partners, how to extend this idea to other parts of the province,” he concluded.
