Beira Municipality Grants €135,000 for Youth Initiatives

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The municipality of the city of Beira, in central Mozambique, will now provide 10 million meticais (€135,000) annually to fund youth and women’s initiatives, it was announced today.

The project’s objective is to “create self-employment, and from this self-employment, create jobs” president of Beira City Council, Albano Carige, said at the launch of the “Start A Business” project.

The first beneficiaries, numbering 192, are members of various associations, and will repay the amount interest-free.

“We want the Beira residents we’ve become accustomed to: serious, determined, and who know what they want,” urged the mayor of Beira.

The beneficiaries underwent short-term technical and professional training and, at the end, will receive self-employment kits through a partner chosen by the municipality, which will provide assistance to project implementers.

The mayor warned the beneficiaries that a consultant hired by the municipality “will visit at any time to check on the progress of the projects and offer advice to ensure the business is on track”.

Albano Carige also said this year that funds will be made available for agriculture, and young people will be trained for this purpose.

“We don’t want to go back to buying tomatoes from Zimbabwe [a neighbouring country]. We have the land for that. We don’t want to buy products outside the city of Beira. We are working hard, and we are working with an association in Nhangau, where we will work with extension workers to train associations that will begin agricultural processes throughout the city of Beira,” the mayor concluded.

In Mozambique, unemployment increased by 1.8% in the second half of 2024, with a total of 190,558 people unemployed, compared to 187,000 registered in the previous quarter, according to data shared by the government in March.
