Cabo Delgado: One year on, electricity is restored to Mueda

Africa-PressMozambique. A year after it was cut due to the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado, electricity has returned to the town of Mueda, and the various economic activities dependent on it “will resume”.

Mueda town- capital of Mueda district where president Filipe Nyusi was born- was re-connected to the electricity grid on Friday after a year-long hiatus caused by the armed conflict in the province, local authorities have announced.

Economic activities that require electricity “will be resumed”, and the district’s economy “will be dynamised” Mueda mayor Manuel Pitalavalave told Rádio Moçambique.

The power cut was caused by the attack on the locality of Awasse, home to one of the main Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) substations in the province.

Control of the locality was, however, regained by the Mozambican military with Rwandan support during the month of August.

During the blackout, economic agents in Mueda who remained open were forced to resort to alternative energy sources, such as generators, which increased their expenses.

“They spent a lot of money buying diesel for their generators,” Mayor Pitalavalave said.

According to ‘Carta de Moçambique’ sources, EDM resorted to the Macomia substation to restore electricity supply to Mueda district.

The same ‘Carta’ sources underline that the districts of Nangade, Palma and Mocímboa da Praia are still without power.

The armed conflict between military forces and insurgents in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado has cost more than 3,100 lives, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and displaced more than 817,000 people, according to Mozambican authorities.
