Chapo Highlights Young Mozambicans' Economic Role

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Thursday urged young Mozambicans to play a central role in the construction of the foundations for the country’s economic independence.

Speaking in his capacity as President of the ruling Frelimo Party, Chapo made this appeal at the opening, in the southern municipality of Matola, of a national conference of the Frelimo youth wing, the OJM (Mozambican Youth Organisation).

Cited by the independent television station STV, Chapo told the thousand OJM delegates that previous generations had liberated the country and built a sovereign state.

“Today our generation, to which I too belong, have the historic mission of consolidating the state and laying the bases for economic independence”, Chapo declared.

This new mission, he added, “demands an organised, informed and committed youth capable of facing the challenges of a complex conjuncture, marked by strong political competition, technological advances, social networks and artificial intelligence”.

The OJM, Chapo urged, should become “strong, inclusive, sustainable and visionary”. He claimed that today’s young Mozambicans “have shown a growing level of national awareness, and we want to see them increasingly prepared to overcome the challenges of our time, with greater commitment to reforms and to building a prosperous, harmonious and inclusive society”.

Chapo stressed the importance of a careful revision of the OJM’s statutes, ahead of the election of a new OJM leadership scheduled for this conference.

He warned that it is crucial that the OJM avoid mistakes that might weaken the organisation, as had happened during the last amendment of the statutes in April 2022. “We want Statutes that ensure the stability of the OJM bodies for the entire term of office for which they are elected”, said Chapo.

Because of gaps in the Statutes, the OJM has faced situations in which its bodies could not meet for lack of a quorum – many of their members were older than the limit of 35 years set by the organisation’s internal regulations.
